EXHIBITION DESIGNER - UNVEILING THE SPIRIT OF HONG KONG

Re-edit is a new and exciting showcase initiated by Hong Kong’s creative hub, PMQ, with the support from Create Hong Kong (CreateHK) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR Government) as the Lead Sponsor. This exhibition aims to nurture Hong Kong design talents through introduce and showcase their works to major global platform – Milan Design Week. The exposure allows local elite talents to interact and communicate with world-class designers and design brands, resulting in cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary dialogue that will expand the creators’ horizons and elevate their design standard. Furthermore, through the local exhibition, this event also allows the general public and industry practitioners to appreciate their creativity and ingenuity. The exhibition explores and identifies the present in a close parallel with what lies behind and ahead. A contrast of materials becomes the symbol of vision and the juxtaposition of tradition and innovation, past and future, essential for attaining excellence in a constantly changing society like Hong Kong. Through the installation and 10 designs, we unite history and project, imagination and reality, desires that have been fulfilled and the continuing will to challenge rituals and norms and reinvent again and again, to design fresh forms and new adventures.

Continuing the curation direction, AaaM Architects incorporates their desire to explore human relationships and cultural memory in their concept for the Re-edit Hong Kong Showcase, expressing unique facets of Hong Kong through their exhibition designs.

In a concrete jungle like Hong Kong, the rebar symbolises the evolution of the city from a fishing village to a world-class metropolis. The device has shaped our urban environment and come to represent the lasting culture and enduring spirit of Hong Kong.

SHOWCASE WORK - CARTON (RE)LUMINANCE

Shuyan Chan, Bob Pang and Kevin Siu are architects from AaaM, a research studio that explores the expression and communication of architectural designs in human relations as well as the cultural memory of their contexts. The three AaaM architects came up with a novel solid waste solution, thereby giving used Tetra Pak beverage cartons new lives. As this unique packaging material is lined with layers of aluminium, polyethylene and paper, it possesses numerous food-saving properties that also lend themselves to eye-catching, polymorphous and lightweight creations.

Here, they have made use of Tetra Pak’s foldability – which gives the ubiquitous beverage carton form – to build conical honeycombs by washing, flattening, folding and attaching discarded cartons. With the aluminium lining’s metallic, silvery-grey colour, the tree-like honeycombs have partial reflective surfaces like Christmas tree ornaments. Fitted with energy-efficient LED lighting, the structure glows and proudly preaches the virtue of upcycling over the holiday season.

In their new incarnation as sought-after decorations, the conical structures hang from the ceiling as lampshades and moderate lights. They encourage the public to rethink the over-consumption of single-use packaging materials. In the architects’ own words, Carton (Re)Luminance is not “a decorative end product, but a catalytic instrument in both material and ideological terms in the waste recycling process and education to achieve true sustainability”.
